Functional: Aging and Geriatric Urology
Beers Criteria edit
- The risk of medication-related side effects is higher in older adult population due to changes in physiologic function with age or disease
- The American Geriatrics Society has published the Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication (PIM) Use in Older Adults, several of which are frequently used in urology such as alpha-blockers, anti-cholinergics, and nitrofurantoin
- The goal of the Beers Criteria is to improve the effectiveness and safety of prescription practices for geriatric patients
- See Tables 1, 2, and 3 from AUA White Paper on The Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults
